NOTE: The application deadline has passed.

Last week, Dean David Nirenberg announced a new research initiative in the Division of the Social Sciences with the establishment of the Center for International Social Science Research (CISSR), which succeeds the Center for International Studies (CIS). CISSR seeks to build an inclusive community of scholars who are conducting empirical research on pressing issues of global importance from across the social sciences. In winter quarter, CISSR will announce its first call for research proposals. We will support and host our first cohort of CISSR Fellows in 2017-18, creating an environment for research and critical discussion that transcends any single method, discipline, region, or time period.

As a prelude to this winter’s call for research proposals, CISSR invites University of Chicago faculty to submit applications for funding to stage a book conference and accompanying public lecture in Spring Quarter 2017. The grant provides faculty an opportunity to improve their working book manuscripts through input from visiting and local scholars, and to help host and arrange a public lecture by one of the visiting discussants. Note: The application deadline has passed. We anticipate funding of book workshops will continue in future years. For more information about CISSR and our inaugural book conferences, please visit cissr.uchicago.edu or contact cissr@uchicago.edu.

Eligibility

CISSR will provide financial and administrative support to University of Chicago faculty to present their manuscripts on contemporary and historical topics that are global in nature. The manuscript should 1) address a question of international significance from a social science perspective, and 2) contain a strong empirical component.

Financial Support

CISSR will provide up to $7,500 per book conference. Funding is intended to cover the costs of a day-long conference with up to four outside discussants, as well as a public lecture given by one of those discussants on either the evening of or the day before the book workshop. CISSR will also offer logistical support for outside discussants’ travel and accommodations.

Applications

All applications should include a 5-page manuscript proposal with potential conference dates, a draft budget, and a list of invitees, including the proposed public speaker. The application deadline has passed. Please email Manuel Viedma (mviedma@uchicago.edu), Associate Director of CISSR, with any questions.
